Last night the commercials were on mute while I watched something in real-time. I was having a conversation and half-looking at the television when I caught the tail end of this ad for Ralph’s.
What were they thinking, here? I know now that this is part of a WHOLE CAMPAIGN of cartoons humping produce. Did no one, at some point, say, “Hey Larry, hey Wanda, you know, I liked the idea at first…but there’s something in the execution that makes it look like this is a gaggle of humping-crazed lunatic cartoons trying to sell me corn to which they’ve just finished making love.” Don Draper smacks the table and says flatly, “No.” Peggy Olson can’t un-see the club-card-sexing guy at the end and goes home and drinks herself into a coma. Do we love Mad Men because we’re hungry for commercials that look like they were made by someone who cared? Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of good commercials out there; but this one?
Are these flubs tongue-in-cheek? Are commercials starting to make fun of us?

I think sometimes they are. But then other times, they are just genuinely oblivious and stupid.

I think they’re just trying to appeal to the general public and sadly, they do. But I’m not sure if it’s actually helping Ralphs make sales.
