Today's Crusade: Elevator Etiquette at The Ear...
After parking in the garage, Tess and Peter make their way to the elevators. Twenty paces from the elevator doors, a middle-aged woman appears in an ankle brace and crutches. She is limping badly.
Tess: No please, go ahead.
Woman: Oh, why, thank you.
[Tess and Peter slow their pace to a crawl because it is too awkward to pass her; they are, perhaps, worried that they will offend her speed. They...

MEAN GIRLS
by Tess Lynch
When I was in high school, there was a hazing ceremony that was in the final stages of its existence. In it, some senior girls would choose girls from the junior class, lead them down to a beach, blindfold them, and torture/humiliate them (mildly, like making them fellate a banana). Later, I heard of this same stuff going on in my friend’s sororities...

Zoo Story
My favorite play is probably Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story. It was his first play (he wrote it in 3 weeks), and it’s about two guys, Jerry and Peter, who meet in Central Park. I like it because it’s suspenseful and well-written, and because it has lines like:
You’re a vegetable! Go lie down on the ground.
There is also a very tense scene involving tickle torture....

When I was looking at colleges, my mother and I flew from Los Angeles, where we’d spent the previous three years, back to the east coast, where we’d spent all the years before. I was, at the time, dating a person who was in his first year at Wesleyan, and whose opinions on college were, so far, fairly low; at the time, naive to the fact that my parents would be moving back to the east...
Trader Joe's Special Feature
tessipes:
I have been burned by TJ’s so many times, I realized the other day. I’m in this constant battle with the grocery chain; on the one hand, I can shop for two or three days’ worth of food and leave like $25 lighter; on the other hand, some items at Trader Joe’s are so wack that I feel angry at Joe for having screwed me like that. I’m looking at you, cioppino. I know the truth about the...

Often people fuck merely in order to keep from having to talk
but I don’t remember everything else I said.
I heard a rumor my new home will be open in about a month.
Today was the kind of day that rolls around just a few times a year. It was the day we would wash all of our pets (three of them, two cats and a dog).
Lots of people with dogs take their pets to the groomers; we’re lucky because our dog is a priss who won’t get wet or dirty, and also because we’re cheap so we’d probably be washing her at home anyway. The thing about having...
Today's Crusade: Stamps
[Tess, in line at CVS, just after the post office has closed. She finally approaches the register.]
Tess: I’ll have a book of stamps, please.
Cashier: What? Huh? Excuse me?
Tess: You guys don’t have stamps? Didn’t you carry stamps…at some point?
Cashier: I mean, we used to.
Tess: So you don’t.
Cashier: Ralph’s does, though, for sure.
[Tess, in line at...
